Cerasee/Miraculous Vine/Crapaud Pumpkin/Lizard Food: A MAGICAL SILENT DOCTOR

Cerasee has been considered a powerful "silent doctors" from time-in- memorial.  However, due to reasons unknown to many, it has been the subject of attack.  Momordica charantia is the botanical name for cerasee, a powerful 'cure-for-all' which seems to be disappearing from the Barbados landscape.

I am a testimony to its healing power and I have to thank an anglican priest  for his traditional remendy for insomnia, which assisted in the birth of my gift.  In retrospect,  I was  sick,  and found it difficult to sleep. The priest visited  and after hearing my plight he recommended soursop leaf tea. I followed his directions and after a few days I found myself sleeping like a baby. That started me thinking what other 'silent doctors' in my garden could  be used to help others for healing. Since, I was never  seriously ill prior to that time, I never used the 'silent doctors' for healing. I used them especially the culinary ones in teas  and seasonings. I then viewed  that health challange as the Creators' way of bringing my gift of Herbal Healing to the fore-front of my life.  I then moved from the 'back yard 'silent doctors' to the gullies and pastures to gather and research  'Silent Doctors' of Barbados.  The aim of this reserach is to re-discover  what other 'old-time' remedies have Barbadians discarded  because they came from our supposedly-less-educated old people'.

My investigations then took me to Cerasee as it assisted in my recovery from that illness. I ate the green leaves, sucked the red coating off the seeds and used the flowers to brew tea.  Additionally, cerasee is reputed to be a very good blood purifier. In Barbados it is a well-known purgative and there are still many people who continue to use it as a 'cleanser'. Those interviewed also recalled  the days when Mummy and Granny insisted on giving them regular 'washouts' using cerasee.

Muriel Greene, 82, retired agricultural worker and family friend, tells me that in addition to being a purgative, cerasee was used traditionally to treat colds, skin conditions, fevers and diabetes. Another 'old-timer' told me that a few generations back cerasee bush in water was used to treat skin rashes and ulcers, eczema, sores, and all other skin problems. A Cerasee bush bath is also good for arthritis, rheumatism, gout and other similar ailments.

Monica Warner, in her book Herbal Plants of Jamaica, says Jamaican research has confirmed that in addition to the predictable glut of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and aromatic oils, the cerasee plants are also rich in therapeutic agents. Warner also noted fruit extracts in particular, contained insulin-like compounds, HIV-inhibiting proteins, laxative saponins, bitter alkaloids. Cerasee juice and infusions have also been found to be effective in reducing blood sugar. Reserach also shows that cerasee has been used for HBP and malignant ulcers. As a wash, the tea is used externally for sores, rashes, skin ulcers and all skin problems. .

Although cerasee is bitter, it was created by our Creator to bring balance to the sweet foods we consume.  Bitter herbs are excellent for us. However, remember cerasee has little yellow flowers.

Finally, my own investigations show that scientific tests are now validating the practices of our ancestors. As a herbal educator, my dream is to see our people empower themselves to take care of their bodies by accepting the help of our "Silent Doctors". I implore you to do your own extensive research about  Cerasee.  I promise you will never ever regret it.
